How to do BOGO on Shopify

BOGO is a 50% discount wearing a better outfit. Shoppers respond to it far more strongly than to "50% off two", which is why it is worth running — and why it is worth doing the margin arithmetic before you do the setup. Both are below.

Setting up BOGO with Shopify's native discount

1

Open Discounts and choose Buy X get Y. This is the rule type behind every BOGO variant on Shopify.

2

Set the "customer buys" side. Quantity 1 of a product, variant, or a whole collection. Collections are usually the right scope for a seasonal BOGO.

3

Set the "customer gets" side. Quantity 1, discount value free (true BOGO) or a percentage (buy one get one 50% off).

4

Decide automatic or code. Automatic applies with no action from the shopper and generally converts better; a code is better for email and influencer campaigns you want to attribute.

5

Cap the usage. Set maximum uses per order so a cart of ten items does not become five free ones unless you intend that.

6

Check discount combinations. Decide whether BOGO can combine with your order-level or shipping discounts. Leaving this unset is how stores accidentally stack their way to zero margin.

The limitation you will hit immediately

Shopify's native rule discounts the second item once it is in the cart. It does not add the second item. So the shopper has to understand the offer, navigate back, and add another unit — and if they add a different variant than the rule expects, nothing happens and they conclude your promotion is broken.

That gap is why BOGO conversion is usually a cart-UI problem rather than a discount-configuration problem. An app that auto-adds the qualifying item and says plainly "your second one is free" removes the entire failure path. See Buy X Get Y examples, including auto-add to cart for how that behaves in practice.

The margin maths, before you launch

True BOGO on a single product is a 50% discount on two units. If your gross margin is below 50%, you are selling at a loss on every claimed offer — no volume fixes that.

StructureEffective discount on the bundleUse when
Buy 1 get 1 free50%Margin above ~60%, or clearing dated stock
Buy 1 get 1 at 50% off25%The common safe default
Buy 2 get 1 free33%Consumables with repeat use
Buy 1 get a cheaper item freeCost of item 2 onlyProtecting the hero product's price
Spend threshold + free giftGift cost onlyAOV growth without discounting — see GWP

Two further guardrails. Exclude already-discounted items, or BOGO lands on top of a markdown. And watch for stock-up behaviour on consumables: a successful BOGO can pull forward three months of demand from your best customers, which looks like a great week and a flat quarter.

What to measure

Claim count alone proves nothing — it only tells you shoppers like free things. The readable numbers are units per order against your baseline, blended margin on orders that claimed the offer, and whether new-customer orders rose or existing customers simply bought cheaper. NUO AI reports offer views, acceptance rate and discount cost per campaign, so the comparison against your non-offer baseline is a report rather than a spreadsheet exercise.

If the margin maths rules out BOGO on your catalog, the usual substitutes are a tiered reward ladder or a frequently bought together bundle at full price.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set up buy one get one free on Shopify?

Create a discount of type Buy X get Y: set the customer-buys side to quantity 1 of the product or collection, set the customer-gets side to quantity 1 at free, choose automatic or a code, and cap the uses per order. The offer then applies when both units are in the cart.

Does Shopify add the free BOGO item to the cart automatically?

No. The native discount applies to the second unit only once it is already in the cart. Auto-adding the qualifying item — and telling the shopper in the cart that their second one is free — requires an app that can modify the cart.

Is BOGO the same as 50% off?

Mathematically, buy one get one free is a 50% discount across two units. Behaviourally it performs differently: shoppers respond more strongly to getting something free than to an equivalent percentage off, and the offer forces a two-unit purchase, which raises order value.

Can I run BOGO on a whole collection?

Yes. Set the buys and gets sides to a collection rather than a single product. With mixed prices in the collection, check whether the discount applies to the cheapest qualifying item and whether that is the behaviour you want before you launch.

Will BOGO stack with my discount codes?

Only if your discount combinations allow it. Shopify lets you control whether a discount can combine with other product, order, or shipping discounts — review those settings before launch, and see our guide to stacking discounts on Shopify for the full picture.

Is BOGO profitable?

Only above roughly 50–60% gross margin on the product, unless the goal is clearing stock or acquiring customers at a known loss. Below that, buy one get one 50% off or buy 2 get 1 free are the safer structures.
