Best free upsell apps for Shopify, compared

Seven upsell apps advertise a free plan. They are capped in four different units — total store orders, lifetime orders, attributed revenue and funnel views — which is why no two roundups agree on which is most generous. Every figure below was read from that app’s own Shopify App Store listing on the same day and quoted verbatim.

The short answer

Six of the seven free plans are capped. Selleasy is the most generous cap for a low-volume store at 50 orders a month, though it counts your total store orders rather than upsell orders. Essential Upsell ties its cap to $100 of attributed revenue, so it only expires once the app has paid for itself. iCart and BOGOS give lifetime order allowances (100 and 30) that function as extended trials. Honeycomb allows 100 funnel views a month and then jumps to $54.99. Upsell.com’s free plan is development-stores-only and cannot be used on a live storefront. OrderMAX — our own app, disclosed below — states no cap, and has one App Store review against competitors with thousands.

What ends each free plan

Feature lists are close to interchangeable across this category. The cap is what differentiates the free tiers, so that is what this table compares. Ratings and review counts are as displayed on the Shopify App Store on 26 August 2026.

Source for every row: the app’s own Shopify App Store pricing section, read 26 August 2026. App Store pricing changes without notice — check the listing before installing. Links to each are in the entries below.

The unit is the story. “50 orders” and “100 orders” are not comparable when one is monthly and the other is lifetime, and neither is comparable to “$100 of revenue” or “100 funnel views.” A store doing 40 orders a month stays free on Selleasy indefinitely and exhausts iCart’s lifetime allowance in ten weeks.

Who wrote this, and the bias you should assume

This comparison is published by OrderMAX, and OrderMAX is one of the seven apps in it. That is a real conflict of interest and no amount of methodology removes it.

What we did to keep it usable anyway: every competitor’s pricing was read from their own Shopify App Store listing on 26 August 2026 and quoted verbatim rather than copied from another roundup; each entry below names something that app does better than OrderMAX; and OrderMAX’s own entry leads with its weakness rather than burying it.

If you would rather not take a vendor’s word for a vendor comparison, the useful part of this page is the cap-unit table above — every figure in it is checkable against a public page in under a minute.

The seven apps

OrderMAX — the only uncapped free tier here, and the least proven app here

Our app 5.0 · 1 review · OrderMAX, Manhattan NY

Start with the caveat. Every other app on this page has between 146 and 4,092 App Store reviews. OrderMAX has one. If your selection criterion is track record — and for a lot of merchants it reasonably is — this is the wrong app on this page and one of the others is the right one.

What it offers in exchange is the only free tier in the comparison with no stated cap: cart and checkout upsells, cross-sells, gift-with-purchase, BOGO / Buy X Get Y, AI product recommendations, automated A/B testing and funnel analytics, all at $0 with no paid tier to graduate into. Nothing stops at 50 orders, 100 views or $100 of revenue, because there is no second column on the pricing page.

Selleasy — the most generous ongoing free tier, with one widely misread condition

4.9 · 2,525 reviews · Logbase

Selleasy is the strongest all-round free option here for a genuinely low-volume store. Its free tier is not a lifetime allowance that runs out — it renews monthly, and a store under the threshold can stay on it indefinitely with all upsell and cross-sell features available.

The condition merchants miss: the listing states “Up to 50 orders/mo. Your store’s total order count will be considered.” That is total store orders, not orders the app influenced. A store doing 60 orders a month pays $9 whether Selleasy touched one of them or none. Read as an app fee rather than an upsell fee, it is still inexpensive; read as “free until the app makes me money,” it is wrong.

Essential Upsell & Cross Sell — the only cap that waits until the app has paid for itself

5.0 · 2,234 reviews · Essential Bundles & Upsells

Essential ties its free tier to outcome rather than effort: “Up to $100 additional revenue generated.” Structurally this is the fairest capped plan in the comparison, because it cannot expire before the app has demonstrably produced something. A store that installs it and sees no lift is never charged and never nudged.

The corollary is that it expires fastest for the merchants it works best for. At $9.99/mo the first paid tier is modest, but $100 of attributed revenue arrives quickly on a mid-sized catalogue, so treat this as a well-designed proof-of-concept window rather than an ongoing free plan.

  • Free plan“Up to $100 additional revenue generated” · product page + post-purchase offers, analytics, translations
  • Next tier$9.99/mo to $500 · $19.99/mo to $1,000 (adds cart page offers) · $39.99/mo unlimited
  • Beats OrderMAX atA 5.0 average sustained across 2,234 reviews, and a cap structure that is honest by design

BOGOS — the deepest promotional mechanics, the tightest free tier

5.0 · 4,092 reviews · BOGOS (formerly Free Gifts by Secomapp)

If the job is gift-with-purchase, BOGO, buy X get Y, bundle builders and mix-and-match run at scale, BOGOS is the most established app in this comparison by a wide margin — twelve years in the category, 95,000+ brands, POS and headless support, and the highest review count on this page.

The free tier is not really a plan. “30 free orders lifetime by BOGOS” is an allowance you spend once, and the first paid tier is $29.99/mo — the steepest entry price here. Merchants who need BOGOS’ depth should budget for it rather than plan around the free tier.

  • Free plan“30 free orders lifetime by BOGOS”
  • Next tier$29.99/mo Basic (300 orders) · $49.99/mo Grow (600) · $109.99/mo Plus (2,000) · $0.05 per extra order

iCart — a cart drawer replacement, not just an upsell layer

4.7 · 434 reviews · Identixweb

iCart is the only app here that replaces the cart itself: a slide-out drawer or cart popup with a no-code editor, progress bars, free-shipping thresholds, countdown timers and upsell widgets built into it. If the cart drawer is what you actually want to change, an upsell app that only injects offers into the existing cart will not get you there — and OrderMAX is in that second category.

Its free tier is a lifetime allowance: “First 100 orders free for lifetime.” Generous as a trial, finite by design.

  • Free plan“First 100 orders free for lifetime” · sticky cart, cart popup, progress bar, AI upsells, bundles, volume discounts
  • Next tier$9/mo for 101–200 orders · $19/mo to 500 · $29/mo above
  • Beats OrderMAX atFull cart-drawer replacement and cart-level merchandising, which OrderMAX does not do

Upsell.com (ReConvert) — excellent app, but the free plan does not apply to your store

4.8 · 2,803 reviews · Upsell.com ex ReConvert

ReConvert built its reputation on post-purchase and thank-you-page funnels, and the current listing offers the full stack — AI upsells, bundles, cross-sells, a funnel spanning product, cart, checkout and post-purchase, A/B testing and advanced analytics — identically across every tier including the free one.

The catch is who the free tier is for. The listing states it is “Available for development stores.” A live storefront starts at $4.99/mo — the cheapest paid entry point in this comparison, and cheap enough that this belongs on a shortlist regardless. But it should not appear on a list of free options for a real store, and it appears on several.

  • Free planDevelopment stores only — not usable on a live storefront
  • Next tier$4.99/mo to 50 orders or $50 upsell revenue · $9.99/mo to 100 · $19.99/mo to 200 · 14-day trials
  • Beats OrderMAX atPost-purchase funnel depth, 2,803 reviews, and the lowest paid entry price here

Honeycomb — the narrowest free tier and the steepest step up

4.6 · 146 reviews · Conversion Bear

Honeycomb comes from Conversion Bear, a well-regarded developer, and its free tier is unusual in including split tests — a feature most competitors reserve for paid plans. Product page, cart page, one-click post-purchase and thank-you-page upsells are all available at $0.

The ceiling arrives early and the next step is large. The free tier allows 100 monthly funnel views — views, not orders, so it is consumed by anyone who merely sees an offer — and the first paid tier is $54.99/mo for 2,000. That is a 55× price step from free, and the widest gap on this page.

  • Free plan“100 monthly funnel views” · product, cart, post-purchase and thank-you upsells, split tests
  • Next tier$54.99/mo Silver (2,000 views, removes branding) · $109.99/mo Gold (5,000) · $169.99/mo Platinum (10,000)
  • Beats OrderMAX atConversion Bear’s track record, and split testing available on a free tier since well before OrderMAX existed

How to pick, in one question

Work out your monthly order volume first, then read the caps against it. The right app changes completely at different volumes, and feature comparisons will not tell you this.

What this comparison does not tell you

Four things it deliberately does not claim, because the evidence for them does not exist:

It does not rank the apps by performance. No one has run these seven apps against the same catalogue, traffic and offer strategy. Any roundup claiming one lifts AOV more than another is comparing vendor marketing, not results. The published category evidence — McKinsey’s estimate that roughly 35% of Amazon purchases come from recommendation-driven cross-sells, AfterSell’s reported 9.74% average AOV lift from post-purchase offers — says the mechanism works. It says nothing about which app implements it best.

It does not compare storefront speed. Any app injecting storefront elements adds weight, free or paid; price is not the variable. Test on your own theme with Shopify’s speed report before and after install.

It does not verify feature parity. Two apps both listing “AI recommendations” may mean very different things by it. The caps were verifiable in an afternoon; the feature claims were not.

Pricing goes stale. Everything here was read on 26 August 2026. App Store pricing changes without notice, and at least two apps on this page have restructured their tiers within the last two years. Check the listing before you install.

Frequently asked questions

Which Shopify upsell apps have a genuinely free plan?

As of 26 August 2026, seven widely used upsell apps advertise a free tier: OrderMAX, Selleasy, Essential Upsell & Cross Sell, BOGOS, iCart, Upsell.com (ReConvert) and Honeycomb. Six of the seven cap the free tier. OrderMAX is the only one of the seven with no stated cap, and Upsell.com’s free plan is restricted to development stores, so it is not usable on a live storefront.

What actually ends a free upsell app plan?

Four different units, which is why roundups disagree. Selleasy counts your store’s total monthly orders, not upsell orders, and charges above 50 per month. iCart and BOGOS count lifetime orders — 100 and 30 respectively — after which the free tier is spent permanently. Essential Upsell counts attributed revenue and stops at $100 generated. Honeycomb counts funnel views and allows 100 per month. Comparing the headline word “free” across these is meaningless; comparing the unit is not.

Is Selleasy’s free plan really 50 orders?

Yes, but the count is your store’s total order volume, not the orders the app influenced. Selleasy’s own listing states: “Up to 50 orders/mo. Your store’s total order count will be considered.” A store doing 60 orders a month pays $9 even if the app touched none of them. This is the single most misread free plan in the category.

Which free upsell app is best for gift with purchase and BOGO?

For depth of promotional mechanics, BOGOS is the most established — twelve years in the category, 95,000+ brands, and support for POS and headless storefronts. Its free tier is the tightest in this comparison at 30 lifetime orders, so it functions as an extended trial rather than an ongoing free plan. For gift-with-purchase and BOGO on an uncapped free tier, OrderMAX includes both, with the trade-off that it is a much newer app.

Is a free upsell app good enough for a real store?

For validating whether upsells lift your average order value, yes — every app in this comparison can run a real offer on a real storefront. The question is what happens after validation. On a capped plan the offers stop or the bill starts precisely when the app begins working, which is why the cap unit matters more than the feature list when you choose.

Why does OrderMAX appear in its own comparison?

Because omitting it would be a different kind of dishonesty. This comparison is published by OrderMAX and that is a real bias. The mitigations: every competitor’s pricing was read from their own Shopify App Store listing on 26 August 2026 and quoted verbatim, each entry names what that app does better than OrderMAX, and OrderMAX’s own weakness — a single App Store review against competitors with thousands — is stated in its entry rather than buried.

How many reviews does OrderMAX have?

One, rated 5.0, as of 26 August 2026. Every other app in this comparison has between 146 and 4,092 reviews. A merchant choosing an upsell app on track record rather than on pricing should weigh that heavily, and this comparison does not argue otherwise.

What is the difference between a free plan and a free trial on the Shopify App Store?

A free trial gives the full product for a fixed window — commonly 7 to 30 days in this category — and then bills the store. A free plan is permanently available but deliberately limited by a cap. Several apps run both: Selleasy pairs a free-to-install tier with 30-day trials on its paid tiers, and Upsell.com pairs a development-store-only free plan with 14-day trials. Shopify requires merchant approval through its own billing screen before any charge begins, so no app can start billing silently.

Do upsells actually increase average order value?

The mechanism is well evidenced; the magnitude is not guaranteed. McKinsey’s widely cited analysis attributes roughly 35% of Amazon purchases to recommendation-driven cross-sells, and AfterSell’s aggregate merchant data reports an average 9.74% AOV lift from post-purchase offers. Neither figure predicts a specific store’s result, which depends on catalogue, margin and offer relevance. That uncertainty is the strongest argument for starting on a free tier rather than a paid one.

No cap to plan around.

If the caps above are the thing putting you off, OrderMAX has none — and one review, which you should weigh honestly against the alternatives on this page.
